Joseph Austin Named UM Army ROTC's Top Cadet of the Year

Joseph Austin, a criminal justice major from Tupelo, was named the University of Mississippi's Army ROTC Top Cadet of the Year. The award goes to the overall top cadet in the program, regardless of class year, and recognizes the cadet who has demonstrated unwavering commitment and most positively influenced the program throughout the year.

UM Students Inducted Into Phi Beta Kappa

Eighty-seven University of Mississippi students were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization in the liberal arts. The university held an induction ceremony on April 5, 2024, in the Johnson Commons Ballroom on campus. Phi Beta Kappa membership is an honor conferred upon fewer than 10% of each graduating class. Students do not apply for membership but are elected by the chapter after a review of the academic records of each eligible candidate.

Caroline Stanford Named UM Army ROTC's Top Junior of the Year

Caroline Stanford, a public policy leadership and Arabic major from Flora, was named Top Junior of the Year at the University of Mississippi's Army ROTC Awards Banquet. To receive this award, a cadet is evaluated upon academic performance, performance in ROTC, attendance, physical fitness, volunteer work and cadre assessment. "Cadet Stanford demonstrated superior excellence across all facets of cadet life in the most demanding year of Army ROTC," said Myron "MC" McWashington, recruiting operations officer.

Reed Appel Named UM Army ROTC's Top Freshman of the Year

Reed Appel, a finance major from Milford, Ohio, was named Top Freshman of the Year at the University of Mississippi's Army ROTC Awards Banquet. To receive this award, a cadet is evaluated upon academic performance, performance in ROTC, attendance, physical fitness, volunteer work and cadre assessment.

UM Students Inducted into Phi Kappa Phi

More than 140 University of Mississippi students were welcomed into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor societies for all academic disciplines. The university held an induction ceremony on April 4, 2024, at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts on campus. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is based on a student's character and academic standing. Juniors must have completed 72 credit hours and rank in the top 7.5% of their class, while seniors and graduate students must rank in the top 10% of their class.

UM Student Christian Boudreaux Named Truman Scholar

From across the world, University of Mississippi biology major Christian Boudreaux received a life-changing Zoom call from Chancellor Glenn Boyce last week. Despite Zanzibar's spotty internet service, the message was clear: Boudreaux had won a coveted Truman Scholarship. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, the nation's official living memorial to the 33rd U.S. president, announced the junior from Oxford as the university's 19th Truman Scholar on April 12. The foundation awards scholarships based on outstanding leadership potential and commitment to a career in public service.

University of Mississippi Student Lake Dodson Studies Abroad in South Korea

Lake Dodson, a political science major at the University of Mississippi, had the opportunity of a lifetime to study abroad last fall at Kyung Hee University, the only university in South Korea with a nuclear reactor on campus. Dodson, of Madison, studied Korean foreign policy, North-South Korean relations and carried out nuclear research entirely in the Korean language.
